Tee Many Choices

TAEJI

“Care if I join you?”

Looking up over the top of my book, I was prepared to give someone the cold shoulder until I realized it was a familiar face.

“Che!” I exclaimed, snapping the pages of my book closed. “Of course, you can. How have you been?”

Signature sexy smile on his face, he set his tray of food down on the table before sliding into the booth across from me.

“I’ve been great, thanks for asking.” He cut his eyes down to my book. It was one of my faves: Their Eyes Were Watching God.

“Don’t stop reading on my behalf,” he told me. “I didn’t want to interrupt you but you’re sitting at the only highly-coveted booth with a free seat.”

I laughed and nodded my head. “I know and you wouldn’t believe what I had to do to get this booth. I had to practically rush an old man to hurry and finish up his chicken sandwich.”

“I won’t judge you for your tactics in securing the best seat in the house,” Che replied. “How’s life been treating you?”

“Ugh.” I sighed. “Where do I start?”

“At the beginning,” was all the permission I needed to more forward with spilling my guts.

“Well, remember the ex I saw when I was walking with you a couple days ago?” Che nodded as he started eating his lunch and I continued on. “Long story short, he gave me a ride to pick up my daughter the other day. And since then, my emotions have been so over the place I’ve been eating myself out of house and—Oh my God!”

I gasped, putting my hand over my mouth as I caught a familiar set of eyes looking back at me.

“What?” Che frowned, observing the look in my eyes. Grabbing his hand, I stopped him as soon as he was about to turn around to follow what I’d been looking at.

“Don’t turn around,” I said with an even tone, trying to keep it cool. “He’s here!

“Who’s here?”

Louis!

Che frowned. “Louis who?”

“My ex,” I hissed. “The one I was just telling you about! He’s standing in the lunch line. And he just looked my way.”

Che gave me a blank stare. “So...?”

I ducked my head, feeling as if my cheeks were turning bright cherry red from shame.

“So, I can’t see him right now. I... it’s hard to explain.”

A few seconds passed as Che scrutinized my expression before he made a clicking sound with his tongue and smiled.

“Yeah... So what really happened during this car ride home?”
